The pandemic would have answered the fervent daily hopes and prayers of my childhood and adolescence: that somehow I wouldn't have to go to school anymore but could keep learning.

"Our kids can't go to school, we've stolen their mental health and joy!"

Look, spare a thought for kids like I was -- we are not unusual -- my mental health would have improved and my joy immeasurably increased if I had suddenly not had to go into the hell of public school.

When I was in 5th grade a gang of boys used to physically attack me and my best friend at recess every day. The teachers sat us all down to talk it out instead of just telling them to fucking stop.

In middle school at recess I regularly hid in a clump of pine trees to avoid bullies until my science teacher noticed and said I could spend recess in his classroom if he wasn't the recess monitor.
