How the rise and fall of Mamchester United has mirrored the career of The Undertaker.

A thread.
Alex Ferguson joined in 1986, but it would be 1990 before he lifted his first silverware at United with the FA Cup.

Mark ‘Undertaker’ Calaway made his wrestling debut in 1987, but it would also be 1990 before he hit the big time. Debuting at WWF’s Survivor Series event.
1991 would see United add another trophy. The Cup Winners Cup, with a huge victory over Barcelona. Fergie’s first European honour with the club.

Undertaker would win his first major title too, defeating Hulk Hogan for the WWF title at that year’s Survivor Series.
91 would also see United capture the European Super Cup too, as well as the start of ‘The Streak’ - Undertaker’s incredible winning run at WrestleMania. Started off with victory over Jimmy ‘Superfly Snuka’ at Mania 7.
In 1992, both would record victories at the old Wembley within months of each other.

United overcame Nottingham Forest to win their first ever League Cup, whilst Undertaker showed up on a hearse to defeat Kamala (RIP)
United would have an incredible period of domination the mid-90s, winning nearly everything they played for. Success in Europe was more difficult to come by though.

Similarly, Undertaker remained in strong positions, but success against the WWF’s top, top stars became rare.
United would only surrender the Premier League to Blackburn in 94/95, before going on to win it back to back in 95/96 & 96/97.

Undertaker would fight his way back up the card too, and defeated Psycho Sid Vicious to reclaim the WWF title at 1997’s WrestleMania 13.
Again though, neither’s domination couldn’t be kept up. Undertaker lost the title at that year’s SummerSlam to Bret Hart, whilst United surrendered the league to Arsenal.

1998 would be one of only two trophyless seasons that decade for United.
1999 would be a lot better though,

On May 23rd, Undertaker would reclaim the WWF title (in slightly dodgy circumstances) at Over the Edge against Stone Cold Steve Austin.

On May 26th, United sealed an incredible treble with their late Champions League winner in Barcelona.
In 2000, both Sir Alex Ferguson and The Undertaker remarkably came to the exact same realisation - the competition around them was getting stronger. To compete with the very best, they had to adapt.

In United’s case, Juventus & Real Madrid. In Taker’s, Stone Cold & The Rock.
United now primarily used more of a 4-5-1, much to the annoyance of traditionalists who had seen title after title delivered with 4-4-2.

Undertaker was completely different too. A bike, Limp Bizkit, actually talking like a real guy. It was a strange time for both.
Mixed success followed. Undertaker remained near the top of the card, even capturing the Undisputed Championship, beating Hulk Hogan at Judgement Day 2002.

United traded league titles with Arsenal, but success in Europe still remained difficult.

It never felt quite the same.
Returns to tradition would bring back success. Undertaker was The Deadman once again, and United’s counter-attacking 4-4-2 had been given a modern twist (and Cristiano Ronaldo) making them a serious force again.
2007 would be the turning point. A long awaited league title for United, and a first World Title in 5 years for Undertaker.
They both hit their peaks at the exact same time. 2008 saw United finally lift the Champions League again in Moscow, whilst Undertaker won another world title, defeating Edge in the main event of that year’s WrestleMania.
They were dominant forces once again. United won 3 consecutive league taitles (appearing in another CL final too) whilst Undertaker put on a string of some of the greatest WrestleMania matches ever seen, against Shawn Michaels & Triple H.
2013 is where things came to an end though.

April 7th - Undertaker produced another classic against CM Punk, going 21-0 at WrestleMania.

April 23rd - United won their final trophy under the departing Sir Alex Ferguson, wrestling it back from Manchester City.
2014 is where it all goes tits up. David Moyes is appointed and United endure their worst season in decades. Years of aura and intimidation gone in a matter of months.
Less than two weeks before Moyes loses his job, a beaten down Undertaker loses his streak at WrestleMania 30 in one of the most unbelievable moments in wrestling history.
Legacies that started at the same time as each other, ended at the same time too.

Undertaker would keep wrestling, with occasional highlights, but was a shadow of his former self.

Man United would keep playing football, win the odd trophy, but never the big one.
The only real difference is Undertaker eventually rode off into the night, retiring at this year’s WrestleMania.

United? Well, they just keep on embarassing themselves.
Happy retirememt Undertaker.
