“Among the things we’ve given up to this pandemic, it’s become clear, are our children’s external worlds, and some of their mental health, and much of their joy. We gave that all up, often without noticing.” https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/what-weve-stolen-our-kids/615211/
This piece is SO good and so compassionate and so centering of kids’ experiences (which a lot of pieces about schools completely miss). It’s not an argument for re-opening classrooms, but a hard look at what it means for our kids to not be in classrooms.
Of course this is not reflective of every kid’s experience - I wrote last week about how for some kids, mine included, distance learning was good for them academically - but it’s an important perspective, and no article can be everything to everyone https://guce.huffingtonpost.ca/consent?brandType=nonEU&lang=en-ca&done=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ehuffingtonpost%2Eca%2Fentry%2Fcovid%2Dhomeschool%2Dkids%2Dspecial%2Dneeds%5Fca%5F5f2da616c5b6e96a22b258e8&gcrumb=YgF7UQ4=
