"how does anyone justify making it harder for everyone to vote"
I see you've somehow never met and spoken to an actual republican. lucky! a lot of genuine confusion about this, so let's take a moment to clarify what's going on here. there's something very important being missed.

They know very well they cannot ever win if everybody voted and every vote is counted. Not even close. Have for decades, at every level of government. What they're convinced is going on is only the best (richest, since wealthy means smartest to them, seriously) people should vote
The people earning low-mid 6 figures have been stirred up and scared by the millionaires on Fox News and AM radio (owned and paid by a few billionaires) that a mob of people making low-mid 5 figures are coming for all their SUVs, boats, and designer watches if allowed to vote.
They don't see it as stealing an election, cheating, or gerrymandering. They are convinced that it is necessary to protect the country from too much democracy, that if someone who isn't like them is in charge that's bad for "everyone" (note: they only care about their own family)
The incredible thing about all this is that the people who have convinced themselves (or let themselves be flattered into believing) they're so smart and must do everyone the favor of being in charge are consistent trainwrecks. Absolutely the stupidest people in modern US history
If you've ever tried arguing with a conservative and found you didn't get anywhere, it's likely because like this belief it should be harder for poor people to vote, what you see as a problem they see as a benefit. Many won't openly admit it because they learned it's taboo to say
When they sabotage science education, it is not an exaggeration or to be taken lightly that they believe they are saving humanity from sin, because they've been taught and had reinforced all their lives that topics like evolution is the devil trying to test, tempt, or trick them.
When something bad happens to people they don't see as like them--and they have the narrowest definition imaginable for who is like them--they either don't care, or quietly let it happen. Well, used to be quiet, but the past few years they've been cheering more loudly every time.
Many of their voters are too stupid to tell expert advice from misinformed ideas on masks. But among their leadership, when they fight mask mandates it's because they do see it's killing people, but it's people who wouldn't have voted "correctly" or weren't workers anymore anyway
This is not a joke, overstatement, or conspiracy theory. This is what's blatantly going on when the white house explicitly abandoned having a national plan about the pandemic back when they thought it would disproportionately only affect cities and states that don't vote for them
The only thing new about Trump among conservatives is he lacks subtlety, but for decades they have been this selfish, this stupid, this short-sighted, this anti-science, and this racist. He just can't help himself from saying what they're all thinking, which gets them in trouble.

P.S. Powerful bonus example making rounds today of "When something bad happens to people they don't see as like them... they either don't care, or quietly let it happen." here, it's well worth the 2 minutes to listen to, even if you know and see the point:
