If you're angry with the government's decisions about results, get involved with access work next term. This isn't a one off! Students from disadvantaged backgrounds are let down every single year. This is a symptom of academic inequality.
If you're at Oxford you are in a position to help. Even if it's one disadvantaged student at a time. Here's a thread of access work to get involved in..
You can mentor for @joinzg ! this is an amazing platform. they help students get into all Russell group universities.
You can help pages like this and @exeterjcr Instagram create content to inspire potential students.
You can volunteer to be a college ambassador, give Q&As, and show students round college.
You can volunteer with @tsoxford and let a student shadow you for a day. This is amazing as it gives students such an authentic insight into Oxford life.
If you attended a state school, you can contact your old college or sixth form. They'd love to have you back to speak or even teach a class. (this is the best way to really humanise the mythical ✨Oxford student✨).
You can also contact your old school and offer your contact details to mentor potential applicants! (or you can broadcast that you're willing to mentor on your personal social media & students will come to you!)
You can volunteer at college access residentials and open days (these are really fun too!)
and access doesn't stop at admissions! you can talk to the class officer and help with discussions groups and workshops for current students. last year we ran an imposter syndrome workshop in the JCR. We also have "class chats" which provides students a space to talk openly.
you can get involved with the amazing @oxfordclassact who work extremely hard and are BRILLIANT
be proactive. ask your JCR what you can do to help! social distancing shouldn't stop you, if anything it means we can reach more students via online resources and Zoom events!
get involved with @OxfordFirstGen !! support students who are the first in their family to go to uni
there are so many intersections within academic inequality. get involved with @oxfordACS !! they support students of African and Caribbean heritage who are underrepresented at this uni.
@OxfordUniversi9 and if you're from the North of England, Oxford's northerners society are doing some great work raising awareness about the geographical educational attainment gap. They also put on the best social events in Oxford :))
@CommonGroundOx works to decolonise oxford - really, really important!
You can follow @ExeterJCR.
