Huge anxiety in non-Russell Group unis about financial implications of a) CAG reversion and b) lifting of the cap (assuming both happen which seems likely). Suddenly they may potentially be left with far fewer students including many 1000s they’ve obtained through clearing.
Widespread chatter that some could go bust without a bailout (which long term would be disastrous for inclusivity in HE)
An Academic at a 1992 group uni tells me: “when travel starts properly post covid, Russell Groups will go back to taking high fees international students over lower grade home students. These home students though won't have as many unis to go to because of this mess.”
And from someone in a RG university: “if we’re teaching safely with social distancing .. where do all these students go?!”
