Lot of suspense for Election Day turnout on Tuesday, because Dems making more gains on early turnout than the GOP is, compared to past Aug cycles. Turnout up for both, but Dems saw more improvement. via @NewsbySmiley with help from me https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/article244932147.html 1/4
In Aug 16, about 20% of GOP voted by mail or EV and just 14% of Dems. This Aug, Republicans climb to 25% on early turnout (EV+mail/registered voters) & Dems to 23%. Dems way ahead in votes cast bc county has more Dems registered. Of 300K ballots reported, D=48% & GOP=33% 2/4
In Miami-Dade, the main race on the ballot is for county mayor. And while it's a partisan fight with Dem establishment backing @votedaniella & GOP behind @SteveBovo, it's a non-partisan contest and no Rs or Ds by names. @penelasformayor, a Dem, courting both bases 3/4
So partisan turnout a big factor in contest, but it's not as clear-cut as a partisan race. Even w/ more Dem voters, Miami-Dade has had a Republican mayor since Penelas left in 2004. For Bovo, he likely only needs enough GOP votes to beat 1 of 2 Dems to get into Nov runoff 4/4
