Recently realized I’ve spoken with 100+ undergrads in the last year about getting started in marketing, and decided to share my thoughts on the questions I get most often. See the thread for the highlights

1) Major in whatever you want. I don’t have a marketing degree, and most of my coworkers don’t either. What’s important is that you’re a strong communicator, comfortable with data and teamwork, and eager to learn. You can build those skills in or out of a classroom.
2) “Experience” doesn’t have to mean paid job experience. Most of mine came from extracurriculars—ran marketing for an event, managed a social media account, etc.
3) Startups are a fantastic resource. My first real internship was with a three-person startup, and without that experience, I don’t know if I would be where I am now. Reach out, ask questions, and see if you can get hands-on marketing work with them.
4) Create—then share what you create! It can be awkward, but it’s the best way to get eyes on your work and improve. This will make you a better creator and communicator, and reach you how to build an audience.
5) Do your research. Marketing is a very broad field—my day to day is vastly different from someone at an agency or even in a different marketing function on my same team. The internet is your friend, and so is your network

6) Learn from others! Connect with your alumni network, learn from their experience, and ask them for good people to connect with next. This is one of the best ways to learn about marketing in different industries or functions. (I promise it gets less awkward with time)
