Good morning, CO.
I’m at #CUBoulder where students will begin moving onto campus today. I’ve covered many a move-in day, but none during a pandemic. Things will be different.
Here’s a new story about what Colorado freshmen can expect this year https://www.denverpost.com/2020/08/17/cu-college-fall-2020-csu-covid-freshmen/ #HigherEd

Move-in is spread out this whole week to decrease density. Students will have to show a negative COVID-19 test from past 5 days or get tested here in order to move in. If positive, they can either head home until better if local or move into a quarantine dorm on campus.
I can’t imagine going to college for the 1st time, already nervous & then having to contend w/ a pandemic. Only one person is allowed to enter the dorms w/ students to help them move in.
And CU says there isn’t a certain threshold of COVID cases that will make them go remote.

OK, lots of things are different this year, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that campus is still A BEAUT.
I’m at the CU Events Center where students have to check in and turn in their COVID test. Students only allowed inside, but outside, they get a CU face covering and COVID kit with hygiene supplies inside.
Just interviewed a father and son, Mark and Ethan Boen. Ethan is a freshman, coming from CA. He said he was excited for campus life and not nervous about the virus. His dad said the only ppl who should be nervous are the old professors.
Everyone around me is wearing masks, which are required on campus. Students walking around carrying their COVID results papers.
Used to seeing folks hand out water bottles & sunglasses at move-in, but we’ve got some COVID tests here. Such a weird time.
This is where students are lining up to get tested. They get a bracelet showing they’ve been tested and then head to their dorms to move in, if all is well.
Just talked to incoming freshman Abby Presutti, 18, from Chicago. Abby said she is a little nervous bc she’s never been to a school so big, but not super nervous about the virus. She’s excited for marching band. She has almost all in-person classes and is stoked abt it.
She said she’s coming with a little TV bc she and her roommate like video games. She said if at first it feels safer to wear a mask in her dorm room, she will, but she imagines she’ll start to trust her roommate and her are being safe.
She said CU has done a good job communicating updates and that she feels safe here. “I think things are going to go smoothly” Abby said
Scott Pribble, spokesman for CUPD, said 1200 students are anticipated today to move in, and it’s about the same each day the rest of the week. Pribble said they don’t know how many freshmen students will actually show up but ancitipating a freshmen class of 7,500
Did I just chase down Tycho Cinquini’s family bc I saw he had a beta fish? Absolutely. Fish is named Zoomy. Cinquini is a returning on-campus sophomore. He said he’s excited to move in. “I’ll be as careful as I can, but if there’s an outbreak, there’s an outbreak.” He said
Cinquini said his roommate last year got Zoomy for him as a birthday present. That sort of fun and camaraderie is what made Cinquini happy to return. He said he learned he needed to bring more clothes than he did last year. Classic.
Forgot to mention, the Boen family said they drove from CA and ran into a huge problem and detour when reaching the wildfires in the west. He said they didn’t know about the fires. Feel like some students driving from the west will get a welcome to CO they didn’t expect.
United Campus Workers is Colorado, an employee union, is out best the intersection families turn in. Emma Cating’s sign says “how many have to die before move-out day” Cating is concerned about the density of students on campus during the pandemic.
Union President Alex Wolf-Root holds a sign outside #CUBouder move-in saying “If I die of COVID tell Mark Kennedy to teach my class.”
Just talked to mom Stacey Schweiger and daughter Olivia Schweiger. Stacey said the family was nervous getting here but now feels safe. They’re coming from Florida. “I am so excited and happy and just relieved that we’re having school at all” Stacey said.
Olivia said she’s excited about being in the mountains and being in nature and making new friends. She said she’s nervous about being on her own across the country from her family. Most of her classes are online.
Olivia said she is concerned about the campus maybe having to move fully remote if cases start popping up. “It’s always scary to think about because the virus just keeps coming” she said. But her mom said CU has done a good job so far and that she feels safer here than Florida.
I know I’ve only talked to a small sample size, but so far nobody really seems too concerned about move-in or the virus. When I moved in when there was no pandemic, I was, like, way more nervous and freaked out than anyone I talked to? Students seem to be stoked for independence
Or, you know, they’re just putting on a brave face and going to go cry under a tree when their parents pull away like I did.
Overall, it’s a lot less packed than a normal move-in day

Came over to Norlin Quad just to see what it was like. Totally empty over here. Man, I miss this beautiful campus.
There are several of these outdoor tents around campus with seating and a little desk spaced out inside.
