With another application season upon us, lets throw the idea of “fit” in the trash.

It’s coded language for classist, ableist, sexist, racist, xenophobic, LGBTQ+phobic judgments.

By upholding the status quo, it dismisses true justice and inclusion #AcademicTwitter #MedTwitter
Praising an applicant for being a good fit can be dangerous if unchecked. What does fit mean? Dont let it be synonymous for “they’re just like us” if your face sheet already doesnt reflect the diversity your program claims to value.

Do they have the skills? Can they do the work?
Important to acknowledge for applicants that the idea of fit also leads to internalized devaluation of anyone outside the norm. We are led to doubt if we deserve educational opportunities because we don’t fit in. Those feelings cloud our work, how we apply, how we present, etc.
Fitting in isn’t the standard. As healthcare continues to inequitably serve marginalized communities, we can’t waste time and energy making sure people fit in. Support people in their training just because they want it, they worked for it, and their perspective is necessary.
