Ok, a positive thread.

I’ve been thinking about the stories of leadership abuses, fails, falls, and wounds. My big question is: how do I lead for the long haul in a healthy way?

Here are my 7 marks of a healthy leader....

1/9
1. Love the Lord... this is the foundation and fuel of any ministry. This is the Greatest commandment.

But, we must realise that we can only do this from His love. Thus, our greatest priority must be to soak in the love of God.

2/9
2. Live to serve others....including their reputation. We must always beware of serving ourselves. It is really easy to seem to be serving others (or the Lord), but actually be serving ourselves.

Give up your rights.

3/9
3. Loath sin... we need to genuinely hate it and kill it. Mortification is one of the most neglected doctrines.

We need to hate sin in ourselves and others. We must call it out.

As Paul challenged Peter, we should rebuke one another.

4/9
4. Listen to others... surround yourself with older, more mature believers. Nearly every situation of abuse is marked by leaders who are surrounding by younger people, or older people who are younger in the faith.

We need people who we will listen to.

5/9
5. Leave your ideas of legacy/ego. Be willing to be obscure. Don’t conflate your name with Jesus.

Leaders are hard wired to achieve. That is good, but it is easily polluted. Beware of any ministry that has the leaders name on it....or their face.

6/9
6. Leave your baggage at the cross. Forgive, forgive, forgive. I think bitterness is the root of most scandals. We get hurt, get bitter, callous our heart, start to make self-protecting of promoting decisions....and it is game over.

Most leaders I know are bitter :(

7/9
7. Laugh at yourself. Regularly. Don’t take yourself too seriously. And find people who will laugh at you.

Note: I don’t mean people who are younger than you and laugh at your jokes. That is just a power play. I mean people who actually know you can be an idiot.

So, what would you add? I would love to know.

My greatest fear is that I can tweet this, but not live by it. True self-knowledge is a rare thing.

If you are the praying kind...
