On micro aggressions toward students with disabilities in lab spaces, a thread (please RT).

The purpose of this thread isn't to call attention to the tweeter, it's just that this tweet happens to lend itself to something that's a huge barrier for disabled students in lab.
I cannot tell you how many times I have been downright harassed in labs for things like this that I cannot control. I'm not obligated to disclose my disabilities, nor does that seem to make a difference. People are brutal about small things and PIs will refuse to take or keep
students for small things. Individuals with disabilities are constantly fighting to just get by in labs, and dealing with constant targeted harassment as well as misunderstanding. And a lot of our communication is non-verbal, and there's evidence to suggest that certain
disabilities are quickly judged. Please share this as an example of something in a lab that people may not be able to control, so that others may understand what exclusionary behavior can look like in a lab.
Something that you think is weird, annoying or funny, like the way your lab mate arranges their tubes, or grabs their tips, can literally be the result of a lab mate's physical disability. Let's work to normalize these things, please.
I have cerebral palsy and can only use one eye at a time. I can't help stuff like this, but get punished for it in lab spaces. #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #SciTwitter #ScienceTwitter #Science #MedTwitter #Research #Lab #GradSchool #STEM #STEMEd #HigherEd #HigherEducation
