A little thread of the more interesting games in been to 👇🏻
My first trip to a big ground as United took on Portsmouth in the League Cup. A 2-2 draw at Old Trafford with a fantastic away support. Goals came from Giggs, Cantona and a Paul Walsh brace for the visitors. Kanchelskis shone for United.
Coming into the game 2-0 after the away leg, Rangers needed to conjure some magic to qualify for the tournament proper. Savevski scored just before half time to send the Greeks through at the expense of a strong Rangers side.
The 1999 FA Cup Final, far from a great game but it was the FA Cup Final. Goals from Sheringham and Scholes ticked the second box on the way to the Manchester clubs treble.
I’ve avoid Rovers matches because they’re all a bit obvious, and, well, season tickets. That said I couldn’t leave this one out. Gradel saw red in the first half and Rovers took the lead through Duffy just after Half time but Howson and Beckford sent Leeds back to the 2nd tier.
Edin Dzeko gave the Champions the lead before Liverpool goals from Sturridge and Gerrard made it 2-1 to Liverpool. Finally Sergio Aguero from an accute angle managed to salvage a draw for City with a lofted strike over Reina.
Wales had waited since 1958 to qualify for a tournament and this 1-0 win against group favourites Belgium went a long way to sending them to France. A nervy game, the hosts take the lead in the first half after a wayward header b Nainggolan was pounced on by Bale & Wales held on.
Leverkusen stride into a 2 goal lead at the Bay Arena with goals from Weiser and Tah before the introduction of Alcácer and Sancho turned it round for Dortmund. Larsen, Reus and Paco twice gave the visitors a 4-2 win.
A bonkers match in Amsterdam saw future Champions League semi-finalists Ajax race into a 3-1 lead (Tadić x2, Amesfoort OG), Heerenveen came back to make it 3-3 (Lammers x2 & Van Bergen) before Huntelaar thought he’d won it only for Pierie to make it 4-4 in injury time.
Maradona returns to La Bombonera, Boca need to better River’s result to win the title, River are drawing and with 18 minutes left the ball falls to Carlos Tevez on the edge of the area. He smashes it home to win the title.
