this isn't shade, but it'd be nice to see more guides for editors on how to edit essays and articles better
i know the demand for writing and pitching guides are higher. but it'd be cool if editors could discuss their process more on here - unless i've missed some of them
i'd like to see fewer tweets about what editors don't like in a piece and more on how they bring out the best in a writer's work. do they line edit first, then make big structural changes? or do they work more intuitively? these might be silly questions, but i'm curious
in my experience, editors tend to under-edit or edit superficially because of the pressures of the content machine. or, and i don't think we discuss this enough, they don't really know how to edit properly
and when you're a young writer, being under-edited seems like a huge compliment. then you get older and realise that editors are supposed to help elevate what you've written, not just ensure it's grammatically correct and coherent
there's nothing better than working with an editor who's taken the time to make big, necessary changes to your work. of course, getting heavily edited drafts back can bruise your ego 😂 but once you realise this person just wants the best for your piece, it feels amazing
