What if all lwj ever wanted in life was to be a father. What if as he went through life, getting more powerful and people starting treating him more and more like he was a symbol and not a person he thought, ok it will never happen but…that’s fine. It’s fine. And then. It DOES.
And he gets to raise the most perfect little boy, and then that little boy makes friends with another little boy who could do with a(nother) father figure, and then there’s the other baby Lans in their class, most of whom lost their parents, and none of them are scared of him
And this is much better than anything he could have imagined. Bc even tho they’re not his kids they ARE his kids and he loves them and they love him & always come to him if they need help and AHHHHH

Lan “I accidentally unofficially adopted a whole generation of baby Lans” Wangji
I have some feelings about the fact that lwj was a “law enforcer” at fifteen, and how that probably derailed his entire intended career path (my headcanon is that he wanted to be a doctor, given how easily he fell into practising healing cultivation on the qin, and how his life…
was filled with people he lost and how he probably yearned to have been able to “fix” them (not bc they were broken. But so they would be able to stay. His mother’s illness, his father’s grief, wwx’s…everything).
Anyway he ends up teaching and that’s also good, he loves it and he loves the kids and it’s A-Yuan’s fault that they all love him bc he’s always like “let’s go ask my dad” about everything and his peers are like “we can’t just ask Hanguang-jun!” and A-Yuan is like “why not?”
And it turns out they can, so they do. And then later when they’re on night hunts with other clans and there’s a problem the Lan instinct is to call hgj, and other clans are like what! No! Don’t do that! But the Lans do, and, oh…? Oh hgj isn’t mad? We’re not being punished????
And so it ends up being not just a generation of baby Lans who love and idolise him, but pretty much all the junior cultivators from the Lan, Nie and Ouyang clans. (Some Yao and Su as well, but they pretend not to.)
Hgj always has snacks and he lets them go to the markets after a nighthunt and lets the baby Lans eat meat sometimes, and if a kid is scared or has a nightmare he talks to them til they’re calm, he’s encouraging and supportive and never ever mad at them for making mistakes
And if punishment does need to be given hgj doesn’t assign lines or handstands, he assigns hours: in the gardens or the infirmary or the kitchens, with whichever Lan senior he thinks will be best suited to help that kid with whatever their issue is.
And he has the lowest rate of repeat offenses. The kids generally follow the rules bc they, unlike lwj’s generation, have not had them beaten into them and they know it’s okay to falter. And if they do: HGJ and the Lan Clan will be there to catch them and help them to their feet.
(And everyone wonders what his secret is but it’s just this: he was a child who was never allowed to speak and barely allowed to take up space. Even as a teenager his uncle rarely lets him voice opinions. And that’s an awful thing to experience. So, he doesn’t do that.)
He lets the kids speak, and he LISTENS. He treats their opinions, emotions and problems with the respect he would give to an adult. He gives them a safe place to occupy the space they need. And they all grow up knowing HOW to be people, before they’re expected to be people.
