This is why I wouldn't let players run their own twitter accounts. They definitely read their mentions and probably read loads of criticism about themselves. Psychology shows that if you're exposed to an idea a lot, you start to believe it. https://twitter.com/BernardoCSilva/status/1295032534703714309
There are definitely players out there that have lost confidence because of social media. It's poisonous. Then you get the occasional tweet like Bernardo's which gives fans what they want- a response. It shows the whole world that you care about what fans say about your club.
After Bernardo's posts about Mendy, the club should've told him to hire someone to run his account. Not the only City player that is affected by social media, Laporte once disabled comments or did something along those lines.
Clubs and people/agencies that run players' accounts aren't doing a good enough job either. There are so many instances where fans dig up questionable posts/tweets players posted when they were teenagers.
When a player goes pro, the club/agency should sweep the entire account and delete everything questionable. Or they should simply deactivate their previous accounts and make a new one.
Feel like young players should definitely not be on Twitter as it's so easy to tweet something that people will try to 'cancel' you for. Also, young players are new to the game, they're not used to facing criticism on a large-scale (that comes with experience).
Gary Neville once said he thinks all players should run their social media accounts as it's a useful skill. I have to disagree as it can affect your mindset/confidence + you can also accidentally ruin your brand.
It won't be long until we see a high-profile player receive a serious ban for something on their social media.
