My attempt at a real-life thread with actual information.

I have crunched last season's numbers to find what GW1 team - in what FORMATION - would have yielded the highest points. This is not for masturbatory purposes! But to give us vital info for the season to come!
22 of the highest scoring players.

Mainly premium attackers at top but an incredible showing from TAA and honourable mentions for Martial, Ings and Jiminez.
Now ordered by Points Per Million (PPM)

Pope = king

Ings flying flag for forwards. (Martial, KDB and Jiminez up there too)

But really it's just the story of the defenders.

With poor Sterling at the bottom and many other high scorers (Auba; Salah; Mane) not much better.
So now I construct the team.

I use their GW1 starting price (last season's)

KDB obvs perma-captain.

And try and find the best possible team.

And the most effective formation.

Budget around 82.5 (allowing me some bench fodder)
The value would make you think that 5 at the back would be best formation.

Here is best 5 at the back team.

2362 points. Gets you comfortably into top 10k. Not bad.

But actually the weakest formation.
The best is 4-3-3 formation - 2414 points. Triple Liverpool defence. So NO SALAH. And not even poor old Lundstram.

This team would have got you to about 1,500K.

It has a lot of value in it. But Sterling (with lowest value in the group) is still needed for points ceiling.
4-4-2 does fine too. 2390 - better than 5 at the back - gets you to around 9k. Lundstram gets to strut his stuff in this one too!

As you can see, I have a mill to spare here too.... So this could make up ground on 4-3-3 in theory - e.g if Son had had a good season.
Now how about 3 at the back, you know... that formation I USED for the majority of the season?? Best I could get for that is actually 2386.

Not as good as 4-4-2 but v close. A bit off 4-3-3 tho. However better than 5 at the back.

(Spent 83 because of benched defenders)
But hold on, if I cheat a bit and give myself 83.5 (with defenders as bench fodder this is possible, if not advisable)

I actually scrape a high score by 1 point!

2415!! Getting you OR of about 500!!

With Mane and Salah double up for all the nerds to drool over.
So what have we learnt from this?

That's not rhetorical. I have no idea.

But I'll give it a go.

4 at the back seems strongest. ->
I wouldn't fixate too strongly on 4-3-3 Vs 4-4-2. Ings, Vardy and Jiminez gave incredible value but this may not be replicated this season.

Find the mid-priced over-achievers in midfield or forward-line and stick with them! Alongside your premiums obviously.
But if you really want to fly close to the sun. It is possible to get a mega score with 3 at the back but you'll need to find another Lord Lundstram. And also another Pope. As well as a wafer thin bench.
The basic philosophy I can take from this is to find that balance between value and high ceiling.

Defenders are where you can bank on value.

The premiums do what the premiums do.

The real art is to find the Martials, Jiminezs and Ingsses of this season and stick like glue
