Right now the Australian government is looking to penalise Google for allegedly harming the media landscape.
For a number of reasons this line of illogic is problematic. Let’s just have a little look at it.

For starters google does not compete with the media companies. They are an infrastructure layer that brings customers to the front door of media sites.

Further without google the traditional news business would have died years ago.
The content that media organisations create only have oxygen now because of digital media companies like google, Facebook and Twitter. (Note: Zuckerberg is evil).

To claim that media companies deserve some money because Google earns from the stories they produce is like a farm wanting a piece of a toll road revenues because their apples travel on the road to get to the retailer.

Media companies would produce the content regardless of whether or not Google put it on their site and google would attract billions of users regardless of whether the media is there.

Furthermore, if the media companies are right (which they are not) then dozens of industries would have a right to claim they are being hard done by. Google is the toll road. It brings good and service to potential customers. It charges for the convenience it provides

If traditional media companies were more strategic and better managed they would have pivoted long ago.
A combination of hubris and ineptitude ensured that wouldn’t happen and the public and shareholders are worse of because of it.

The fact that every media company is the world is not making these claims indicates that they know how to use google and understand the benefits a digital superhighway delivers them.
They also do not operate in the most heavily consolidated media landscape on Earth.

The only reason that an intellectual minnow like Frydenberg can do this is becasue 90% of our media is owned by a hand full of companies that collectively own the government.

The Govt continue to defund Murdoch’s competitors, take previously free broadcasting and give to him to put behind the pay wall, provide taxpayer funding for products that should be on a national broadcaster and attack his competitors.

To prop up an organisational they had neither the strategic or commercial acumen to run their own industry. They controlled everything, had unmatched capital and endless viewers and they still got beaten by a group of teenagers in college.

This is not about what’s fair for media and everything about giving the incompetent oligarch @rupertmurdoch protection from business that are better than his.

The truth is that both Rupert and google are an unhealthy manifestation of the prevailing entrenched hyper capitalism that is destroying our society BUT the argument being made by the govt to protect Murdoch are laughably idiotic.
