I’ve saved up this confession for #conservationweek my favourite NZ native plant is this deadly shrub, one we don’t grow @AklBotanicGrdns or for revegetation. Tutu (Coriaria arborea) is highly poisonous so not easy to incorporate in public gardens or community planting days.
It’s one of the first poisonous native plants we learn about in Aotearoa as it famously ‘killed an elephant’ (from a travelling circus). When bees forage from it the honey can be toxic. Māori know its power well https://maoriplantuse.landcareresearch.co.nz/WebForms/PeoplePlantsDetails.aspx?firstcome=firstcome&PKey=7A36838B-F469-409A-881D-8F0EB53A4668
Tutu grows in disturbed sites & has, what maybe I admire most, root nodules w bacteria that fix nitrogen. So it’s more than a plant it’s a community that restores bare sites on rivers, slips, volcanoes & mountains.
Can I encourage you to share your favourite native NZ plant to ensure #conservationweek shines some light on plants?
