We have community gardens dotted across Frome often on left over bits of land on council estates or like this one - a derelict site. Even tiny plots are sometimes shared between people: someone might have the knowledge & someone else the availability to do the grunt work. Space around the plots make them sociable & I noted a young couple hanging out here during lockdown.
I was shocked to hear they had no outdoor space in their flat so I passed the plot onto them (the young man carved me a spoon as a thank you).
I'm a big fan of the community gardens of Frome. Because they're small they're less of a bind and easier to let go of (though some people tend their plots for years).
