A thread to acknowledge those who've contributed to @CroakeyNews in recent weeks, covering topics ranging from #COVID19 to the #climatecrisis, #healthequity, #mentalhealth, #publichealth, #agedcare, #SDOH & much more besides.
First up, big thanks to @LRussellWolpe for the latest bumper edition of #TheHealthWrap. So much reading & writing goes into this regular feature. Don't miss! https://www.croakey.org/the-health-wrap-aged-care-lessons-plus-the-latest-news-on-climate-health-dementia-and-so-much-more/
As @JenniferDoggett notes in her introduction to this piece, international students make so many contributions to Australia, including, no doubt, as part of the Australian university research effort working to find a vaccine or treatment for #COVID19. https://www.croakey.org/equity-for-students-during-the-covid-19-pandemic-and-beyond/
"Despite this significant contribution, the well-being of international students has been largely neglected during the current COVID-19 pandemic," writes @JenniferDoggett. Thanks also to @ConversationEDU for the opportunity to cross publish this article.
And @JenniferDoggett provided more incisive commentary in her introduction to this piece on aged care, by @michellegrattan & the @ConversationEDU team: https://www.croakey.org/senate-committee-on-covid-19-a-story-of-contrasts/
Also by @JenniferDoggett: 'Senate Committee on COVID-19 – what we learnt about aged care issues https://www.croakey.org/senate-committee-on-covid-19-a-story-of-contrasts/ This article contrasts the statements from the Minister and Government officials at the hearing with those of other stakeholders. #AusPol
"During the hearing it became clear that the Govt’s position on its response to the outbreak differs markedly from those of families of residents, aged care workers & experts and – in some cases – the findings of its regulatory body, the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission"
We have recently begun a new series - #CroakeyYOUTH, to provide a platform for listening to young people. It seems they are given so little space in public/policy/political debate when it is their futures at stake. https://croakey.org/category/croakey-projects/croakeyyouth/
This is the latest from #CroakeyYOUTH: "Who is worrying about future generations? Young people" https://www.croakey.org/who-is-worrying-about-future-generations-young-people/ By Eileen Phoenix Aquino Lam, a recent Master of Public Health graduate ex @unimelb
She writes: "I urge you all to ponder the impact we have on our planet as this will be our lasting legacy." #CroakeyYOUTH
This is an important article from Western Australia, telling the story of an artwork about the impacts of climate change on First Nations people. https://www.croakey.org/ahead-of-landmark-climate-and-health-report-an-artwork-tells-of-the-harmful-impacts/ By @Jade_Braddy
It was created to include in @TheAHCWA submission to the WA Department of Health’s Climate Health Inquiry. The submission recommends ACCHS co-produce policies & strategies embedding community access to renewable energy, water security and climate-resilient infrastructure.
The submission also says ACCHS want to co-produce policies to improve emergency management processes, including post-event counselling. They also would like to see community, clinicians & health professionals educated re the impacts of climate change on First Nations people.
You can also watch an interview w Ronda Clarke, a Nyikina woman, talking about the @TheAHCWA artwork submission to the inquiry.
Warm thanks to everyone who supports our @Patreon crowdfunding campaign to enable us to do more reporting like this on climate & health matters. Find out more here: https://www.patreon.com/croakey #PIJmatters
On related matters, there's an election in the NT coming up VERY soon. What are the hot topics of concern? Thank to Deborah Di Natale from @NTCOSS for looking at some of the critical climate & health issues.
She concludes: "By investing in regional and local solar generation, storage and distribution, an incoming NT Government can unleash huge economic potential for the Territory, as well as delivering power security and cost-effective power delivery for our remote communities....
"We have an opportunity to be world leaders in this space – we just need the political will." Let's see what happens this Saturday (22 August). #NTvotes #NTpol
One of the big news stories of recent times is, of course, the resurgence of #coronavirus in Aotearoa/NZ. There is some timely reading on this in the latest #COVIDwrap from @AlisonSBarrett https://www.croakey.org/covid-19-wrap-lessons-from-new-zealand-and-taiwan-lives-saved-in-victoria-and-animated-communications/
@AlisonSBarrett reports on lessons from Taiwan, new research estimating how many thousands of lives have been saved in Victoria to date, a global approach to public health communications, and an example of healthcare adaptation. https://www.croakey.org/covid-19-wrap-lessons-from-new-zealand-and-taiwan-lives-saved-in-victoria-and-animated-communications/ #globalhealth
Recent weeks have also seen quite a bit of discussion & critique of media practices. Warm thanks @MargaretSimons for sharing her reflections on related with @CroakeyNews readers: Journalists, press conferences and #COVID19: https://www.croakey.org/journalists-press-conferences-and-covid-19-moving-beyond-the-binary/
"Criticise by all means, but never allow that criticism to obscure the importance of what journalists do. Hold us to account, but do not deny our function" - from @MargaretSimons. Meanwhile, I recommend following #PIJmatters if interested in news on public interest journalism
This is a big wrap that I pulled together looking at the pandemic & public interest journalism, from global, national & local angles: Calling for action to avoid “media extinction” https://www.croakey.org/calling-for-action-global-and-local-to-avoid-media-extinction/ #PIJmatters
It links to many useful articles and resources. Have a read and a wander around the internet....
