On Monday, August 10, 2020, Iowa and other midwestern states got hit HARD by a Derecho. What's a Derecho? Here's the news alert from that morning to let you know a little more about it.
A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm associated with fast-moving groups of severe thunderstorms, potentially rivaling hurricanic & tornadic forces.

Unlike other thunderstorms, a derecho seems to strike suddenly. A derecho moves through quickly, but can do much damage in a short time. 70% of all derechos occur between the months of May-August (the warm season).
Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the death tolls from derechos and hurricanes were comparable for the United States.

The storm that hit last Monday had over 480 severe storm reports. Over 1M were left without power.
This derecho traveled over 900 miles with peak gusts around 110mph. This was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Earliest estimates are that over 10M acres of crops are destroyed, nearly 1/3 of Iowa's crops. As in this video, a lot of farmers are covered by crop insurance, which is good.
Iowa farmers took a double hit from the storm. Fields planted with this year's corn were flattened, while grain bins containing last year's harvest were torn open.
IA Gov Kim Reynolds said it will take days/weeks to know the scope of the damage. Jan Dutton, CEO of Prescient Weather, said between 180-270M bushels of corn are expected to be affected. That figure causes a serious dent in yield for IA, but other states could soften the deficit.
