Okay , Greek Mytho Crash Course:

Most of y'all may know about the medusa myth. A quick recap however.
Medusa is Poseidon's girlfriend, also a priestess of Athena (popular claims) Poseidon rapes her in Athena's temple, on Athena's altar. Athena makes Medusa a monster.
Now it's widely believed that Athena couldn't take revenge against Poseidon for the sacrilege against her altar so she punished Medusa. It's also said that she made her a "monster". But history was written by men, and men are lying fuckwads, so let's go.
Medusa was raped. Soon, her rape would be common knowledge. In a patriarchal society, women who have their selves "defiled" are seen as weak, (I need not stress this, y'all have seen the attitude towards rape victims nowadays), subordinate, and are also prone to repeat
offences against themselves. Athena had to remove her from the public eye, and take her far away. She also provided her tools to protect herself from anyone who dare try to violate her again. She wasn't ugly, no. (again, bring to mind the habit of men to call women hideous,
unlikeable, etc etc when they don't respond to their advances) Athena saved Medusa, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
