It's the time of great migration for trainees in medicine. Residents➡️fellows & fellows ➡️faculty.
How prepared do you think you are to start as a faculty ??? You feel
✔️Feel confident??

#TweeterThread- Lessons I learnt as a junior faculty.
I’m no expert and these are by no means “words of wisdom”. These are my experiences and what I learnt from my mentors.
Take what you want from this #Tweetorial and enjoy the journey you are set to embark.
ASK!
Seek suggestions from your current or prior peers and colleagues. Problem- solution- help- support are all linked to each other. Pic courtesy: http://needpix.com .
Business of Medicine
FTE- Full time equivalent- usually work 40hrs/ wk. Your research grants/ admin/ teaching assignments, do substitute for your clincial time FTE.
Eg. if grant covers 50% salary then its 0.5FTE; but discuss productivity bonus model with your institution.
Business of medicine
Relative Value Unit (RVUs)
Defined very well and published on National health policy Forum, 2015.
Business of medicine
Usually the first year compensation is exempt from RVUs.
Productivity is measured by RVUs (yes, it's true!!) so make sure you document well and “fill right charges” for your effort.
Talk to your institution's billing department and seek feedback.
Promotion Tracks in Academia
⚡️Highly variable in each institution, usually clinical, research & education based tracks.
⚡️Get to know the timeline & requirements.
⚡️Promotion shouldn't be sole motivation,
⚡️Be proactive- align your personal & professional goals accordingly.
FIND MENTORS
💥Within & outside of institution for guidance regarding all facets of professional career development
💥Meet with division leadership >1/ yr
💥PATIENCE- Takes time to find the PERFECT FIT!!
YODA- The perfect mentor !!!
STAY HUNGRY… For knowledge, opportunities
⏳Learn new skills
⏳Informal learning
⏳Everyone has an experience to share and enrich yours.
⏳TEACH whenever possible. More one teaches, more one learns.
⏳Makes you a better clinician & a better person.
“Good enough” or “done” is better than perfect.
🔆This mantra- life changing for me. Made me efficient and completed more tasks in same time.
🔆Pursuit for perfectionism➡️ long working hours➡️burn out.
🔆Helps you channel energies where it makes the most impact.
The time is NOW.
✔️Set up short and long term goals.
✔️Will have to do different things before “finding niche”
✔️Life happens and professional and personal goals constantly change.
✔️So every now and then PAUSE, REASSESS, RECALIBRATE priorities
WORK LIFE INTEGRATION
⚡️Different from work life balance
⚡️Prioritize Prioritize Prioritize !!
⚡️AVOID guilt trips! AVOID Comparisons! Rather draw inspirations
⚡️Everyone has their own journey and career graphs
⚡️Recognise signs of Imposter syndrome- learn tools to overcome.
SELFCARE
Burnout is real!!!
Taking “time off”, hobbies, family and friends
Don't brush off signs of Burnout
Have a buddy to watch you for those signs.
CONNECT with like minded people on various platforms.
Share, collaborate, network !!
#NSMC on #SoMe helped me tremendously.
At the end of the day, I always remember why I chose Medicine as a career. My most fulfilling experiences came from this career.
I believe beginner’s anxiety is probably good- has been for me.
Still figuring out, making mistakes but learning in the process.
Good luck!!!
