If Australian media wants to increase diversity in the newsroom then one clear and pretty easy improvement is advertising job roles. I know no one likes to mention it because it’s a more boring part of the debate #media
If you don’t advertise job roles then the pipeline gets filled with people linked to your current (white dominated workforce) rather than people from different backgrounds that will break different stories and draw in new audiences #media
None of the jobs I got as a journalist in Australia were advertised. The only one I’ve had to formally apply for is my current role - which isn’t in editorial (and draws its hiring practices from management consultancy, not media)
I’m obviously super grateful for the opportunities I had as an Aus journalist but it took writing 10 emails every week for a year to beg for work experience and eventually bumping into Speersy while interning at the UN in New York to break in.
