Google was a partner at News Corp, helping us shift to digital with over 24 hours of free training.

They have helped me solve problems at other news companies.

I now work with them to help local and regional publishers build stronger news businesses.

Google did not ask me to share this post or my view, and I'm sure that they would prefer that I didn't.

I've always had a strong sense of justice — it said so on my primary school report card — and this feels wrong. It has for a while.
In 2018, Google sent more than 2 billion clicks to Australian news publishers from Aussie users.

They sent an additional 1 billion clicks of international traffic to Aussie news sites.

How much did they get paid for this service?

Zero.
Here's how it works:
🔎 People search for news
👉🏻 Google sends them to a news site
đź’° Publishers make the coin
✖️ Google makes nothing
Now, Google does make money when a news company buys an ad and someone clicks on it, but it's a fraction of the numbers reported.

. @melsilva puts it at 10M annually, and you'll notice that ads are rare.

Look at this result for #COVID19: https://g.co/kgs/JLyeoH
So, why do people keep saying that Google and Facebook stole money from the news industry?

There are many reasons, but none of them stand up when weighed honestly.

So what changed? What's the problem?

Audiences behaviour shifted, and publishers get paid less in digital.
You can help the news industry by subscribing or donating through membership to your favourite publications.

Visiting the host of free commercial news sites is also a great way to support independent journalism.

They make money through your attention (advertising).
Journalism is about facts. It's also about the public good.

It's important that we have a facts-based discussion, and no good will come from choosing an enemy instead of working towards a solution.
Thank you for indulging me, I hope this has helped.
