Because our commitment to #openscience & dismantling #echochambers is (slightly) stronger than my #neuroticperfectionist #impostersyndrome, Mesoscience Lab uploaded a close-to-final draft of our very first pre-print (!!) and encourage feedback. (1/9)

At @mesoscience, we believe that science is better with #openaccess data, #openpeerreview, #reproducibility, and #opensourcecode. This is our first chance to put those values into practice. Not gonna lie, sharing the messy realities of research is kinda terrifying. (2/9)
We're still figuring out how to put our values into practice. Tentatively, our standard for a manuscript are:
(1) post simple-to-use scripts that reproduce every calculation;
(2) post aggregated raw data for figures;
(3) publish in #openaccessjournals where practical. (3/9)
What about #openpeerreview and #openaccesspublishing? #ACSjournals don't support it. Rather than go through formal #peerreview twice (ouch!), we're posting the manuscript a week before submission and inviting #chemtwitter to #peeredit (4/9)
We know p.3 language needs fine-tuning and additional diffusion calculations for Fig. 4 are in the works. What else? Anything need clarification? Any topics missing? Looking at you #chemgradstudents and #chempostdocs. LMK by tweet, email, DM, carrier pigeon (5/9)
#openscience also means #openaccess to #reproduciblecode, so we posted our complete (frozen) source code. This is the exact version of the code that ran all reported calculations, bugs and all. (6/9)
#keepingitreal we found the bug a month ago đŸ˜±. It didn't effect our calculations because of this particular model system's characteristics. Still. #awkward. But that's what #openscience is #IRL. (7/9)
A stable version of the code is in our #opensource repository, https://github.com/MesoscienceLab/mesohops, with documentation ( https://mesohops.readthedocs.io ) and comments on every function, class, and method. We'll update as newer versions are developed. Including a patch for the damn bug. (8/9)
Is this #openscience? If it feels scary, does that mean we're doing this right? (9/9)
