My wife is working out wording for her student surveys around questions of pronouns with the help of folk online, and it spawned what's quickly turning into a SNL character called "The Overly Aggressive Ally"
Basically folks suggested that rather than "preferred pronoun" she just asked for "pronoun" because it's not a preference thing, it's who they are. Absolutely right point, also, only kinda because being a teacher there's a second half to that question:
"What are your pronouns?" and "What pronouns would you prefer I use when speaking to your parents or guardians?" because you don't wanna put kids in bad situations or out them to their parents or guardians.
And that's where the Overly Aggressive Ally comes in, the overly aggressive ally is gonna have a heated debate about your gender with your parents without anybody asking. They're gonna screw up your whole life just to prove a point.
Dealing with micro-aggressions at work? Don't worry, overly aggressive ally is gonna ruin your whole day by calling your boss out in the middle of the meeting to tell them how personally demeaned an insulted you feel by this.
Are you protesting police violence? Don't worry, overly aggressive ally is here to throw rocks at the police for you! Nervous that your coworkers are speculating about your sex life? Don't worry, overly aggressive ally is going to out you so they can say how proud they are of you
Anyway, y'all, don't be that guy. Look out for people and recognize your privilege, but don't do it in a way that tries to make you look like a progressive hero while actually hurting the people you say you wanna help.
