THREAD: I just finished building the minis from @atomicmassgames #marvelcrisisprotocol game & I widh to share my thoughts on the models & experience building them. This is coming from a hobbyist with a lot of experience (17 yrs) but moderate abilities when it comes to assembly.
Materials: Immediate win. I've worked with hard plastic, various types of metals & resin miniatures. It always impressed me when a company doesn't skimp on quality materials. No complaints!
Mold Lines: A+! Almost nonexistent. When I do notice them they're subtle, quick to clean & don't cut through delicate details. The sprue designs are top notch.
Assembly: Some mixed feelings. Its nice that almost every connection point has a peg & hole. Some of the pegs don't go in properly or the joined pieces don't sit flush. You may need to do some gentle filing to get a more flush connection. Also, there are many REALLY small parts.
Gaps: This is my one major gripe. Gaps & more gaps. Despite your best efforts some parts will not be flush. How you feel with this depends on how picky you are. I'm not but even I found myself going the extra mile. Some of them are just too bad to ignore.
Details: This is a mixed issue. On 1 hand the details are awesome. These are great looking minis! The problem is that some of the details are shallow. Even a light mist with a spray can distorted some details that I will have to freehand. The worst are the wings on Cap's helmet.
Overall: There were some frustrations when I was building these. Some were easier than others. Some required me to go the extra mile while others didn't. But the pros outweigh the cons! At the end of the day they are gorgeous models & I am stoked to start painting these!
My Advice 1: Dry fit everything! This will help you gauge how much work you may need to do to get the best connection. For the unavoidable gaps I recommend Vallejo Plastic Putty for the big ones & any matte varnish for small ones.
My Advice 2: I can't stress this enough: take your time! With such small details these models can be unforgiving if you aren't careful cutting, cleaning or gluing them. Plastic glue does work, but don't hesitate to use super glue on certain joints.
My Advice 3: Have fun! Be optimistic! Remember these are superheroes! I have been wargaming since college but I've been reading comics since I was a little kid. I cannot wait to start painting & playing! Look to this space for WIPs & finished models!
Side note: I typed this really fast on a cell phone keyboard and had to make edits on the fly to trim each tweet down to fit 280 characters. Please forgive typos & bad grammar! It's not like I'm running a review account! 😁
