A terrific 1st week of coach education sessions with the Basketball South Australia High Performance staff. Week 1 was "Offensive concepts": What are the concepts that underpin ALL offence and what is some simple language we can use to describe them? Follow this thread for more.
What do we want to do on offence?
1) Shoot EASY shots.
2) Make things HARD for the D.
Those terms "EASY" & "HARD" are applicable in so many scenarios. I.E: Why is it important I am shot ready & play off the catch? Because it makes it HARD for the D to guard both shot & drive.

What does a good O possession look like? 1) Spacing 2) Create an Advantage 3) Shoot. It's that simple. We want it to happen in that order each time. Why? Because there is no use trying to create an adv if we have no space to take the adv. Plus poor spacing makes it EASY for the D
What does an advantage look like? We came up with 11 different advantages in the sessions. Here is an example of a couple. Why is it important to name them? Because we have to be able to describe them to be teach them, as well as, construct environments that simulate them.
What is a good shot? We came up with three key ingredients: 1) Within player's skill set 2) After an Advantage 3) Appropriate to the phase of the shot clock.
We want to help our players have a 'plan' for how they will create advantages. So how do we create them? It can be as simple as using 'pace' to create numerical advantages and OBDs (Off balanced Defenders), up to more complex actions like PNRs.
Lastly, how do we teach it? Practice design is a crucial element of coaching. One phrase I use a lot now is:
"Why do I need to say something to the players if the drill can say it for me?". Here's a drill I use to teach various adv, methods of creating adv & what a good shot is.
