Williams has single-handedly cost us Three finals.
This is poor management from Ole.
Even though Young wasn't good enough for us, he was a leader for us and is miles better than Williams at LB.

1st Picture: You see Williams scanning and he spots his man making a far post run. This is good.
2nd Picture: In the very next moment he decides to pull inside anticipating the cutback. This is naive, the opp. FB should always defend the Far Post.
All our momentum lost.

Now look at the video again.
Watch carefully.
Maguire rightfully covers the goalmouth and scans (he cant see the run behind Williams) pulls up for the cut back.
Football is all about moments.
Point to note:Shaw is one of the best at defending the far post
Let's move on the second goal.
This situation is under control.
All Williams has to do is block Navas on the outside. (Navas' biggest strength throughout his career).
Force Navas to turn back and regain your defensive shape.
This is basic 1v1 defending out wide.
1st Pic:Williams does a weird hop and allows Navas to take a touch out of his feet and cross the ball in.
Meanwhile, Lindelof scans and spots AWB with the man at his far post.
Lindelof moves inside to defend the ball whipped across the far post.
Lindelof's position is decent.
Because of Williams hop(also because it's not his natural side) he has to turn to defend the cross and the ball his knee(probably) and the ball loops over Lindelof.
AWB looses track of his man, DeGea or Lindelof can't react quickly to the deflection and DeJong gets a tap in.

Now look at the video again.
The deflection isn't apparent because of the speed but it completely puts of Lindelof. Ole mentions it in his press conference.
Fa Cup Semi-Final vs Chelsea.
1st Goal: Again it's a simple 2v2 out wide. He's in control in the first picture.
Az plays Willian. He quickly turns while Az makes a run on Williams' blindside.
Caught ballwatching he has no awareness and Az slips into a very good crossing position.
Although Lindelof, Maguire, DDG should do better to react to the initial mistake however it's always better to be proactive rather than reactive in defence. Do not lose your runners.
A simple rotation and here Williams loses the ball.
2nd Goal: All Williams has to do there is pass it back to Maguire. There's no pressure on Maguire and he simply recycles the ball and we can start from there again.
Again, he has to learn a lot. There's no reason to lob it infield and gift Chelsea a transition.
Again, Maguire should close down Mount while Lindelof backs up or vice versa.
Both our CBs back up simultaneously allowing Mount an open shot on Goal.
Still, There are no excuses for DDG. Should save the shot. Period.
The Carabao Cup, 1st Leg at home.
Man City continuosly targeted Williams on the left.
He wasn't comfortable defending at all, lunged in, sloppy passes.
City's first goal was a screamer.
He remains inactive in the second goal.
The 3rd goal:
The balls breaks for City.
Williams stops abruptly instead of running back at the start but due to his recovery pace(a credit) he recovers his position but then again decides to lunge in.
Loses the ball in a dangerous location, which leads to a 3v2 in our box.
3-0
It's harsh to blame Williams here as Jones embarrasses himself but these are the margins the big games.
3-0 and the tie is done.
Final thoughts: Williams definitely has the potential to become a squad player for us.
He has good recovery pace, he is comfortable with the ball and has a good character.
He's 18 and he'll learn from his mistakes. But right now he isn't ready to play the big knockout games.
Having said that, I feel bad for him. He would not have been playing these games but a mixture of Shaw's injuries and Young's departure, has led to him starting all these games.
But he needs a loan or two to learn how to defend better, perhaps play on his natural side.
We need a better LB next season.
A small change in personnel may have led us to atleast one of the finals and given us a better chance to win.
It's no coincidence that since we have lost Shaw we have suffered a lot.
