Opposition to Confederate monuments is not new. They've been challenged, defaced, vandalized and re-contextualized ever since they started going up. Here are just a few examples...

Pittsboro, NC, 1907 - Confederate monument defaced with black shoe polish, one week after it was unveiled.

Raleigh, NC, 1898 - Confederate cemetery memorial vandalized.

Monroe, LA, 1896 - Confederate monument broken within two months of being erected.

Chattanooga, TN, 1877 - Confederate monument vandalized.

Staunton, VA, 1913 - Confederate monument covered with green paint. (Dedicated in 1888)

Burgaw, NC, 1914 - Confederate monument defaced with black paint, within several weeks of unveiling. It was coated with paint a second time later.

Alexandria, VA, 1890 - Confederate monument "defaced" by someone spitting on it, causing "much indignation." It was dedicated May 24, 1889.

New Bern, NC, 1898 - Confederate monument in the local cemetery vandalized. (Dedicated in May 1885).
