Ok. I’m going to say it.

Ratzinger in instituting Summorum Pontificum did it to create process of more organic reform because he felt it didn’t happen after the council. I also believe this to be behind his motives for Anglicanorum Coetibus as well.

(Small thread)
This means that the council taught correctly about liturgy and was right to ask for reform even. But it is obvious that the reforms weren’t organic, as that has always been how liturgy develops, so he wanted to reignite true and proper reform without abrogating EITHER valid form.
I think this is behind a lot of the issues after the council around liturgy and stuff. There was a sudden cutting off that wasn’t organic and seemingly bureaucratically imposed. This isn’t the council’s fault, though, and it’s wrong to put the blame on the council.
This is where a lot of dialogue can happen because this is the discussion to begin stemming the tide of the growing debate and even possible schisms coming around in the church. It means priests need to be allowed to celebrate Mass as learned from both expressions
And we need to stop being afraid as if this is some weird backwards thing. It’s not. I understand that a lot of traditionalist minded folks are frustrated that their concerns aren’t heard and frankly they’re right. At the same time, too often the council is sort of chucked...
As if optional, and it’s not. It’s binding. We must submit to it. But where I think a lot of healing can happen is if traditionalists would start being open to what the council actually teaches & leaders in the church being ok with discussing what organic liturgy should look like
Maybe we need to stop fearing each side, seeing them as an enemy and holding them in resentment. Resentment is a sin. There is a way forward that can be enriching for the whole church, but it requires a listening heart and the lens of charity to achieve this.
