At a time of deepening partisan politics globally, Ardern delivered a masterclass in how to lead a nation beyond tribal party politics & what is fascinating about this for political scientists is that it’s a liberal democratic not populist leadership-which is also unusual #nzpol
To be frank, Ardern’s now leading in a way well beyond the context in which she now lives-even if you don’t like her-this is world class leadership for a country of 5 million-it’s like when we somehow manage produce an artist or athlete from our small place who takes NZ with them
And I don’t mean that in a breathless cheerleading way but as someone interested in political leadership-I come from a family who love sport & developing sporting talent - in the same way when you see remarkable civic leadership it’s graceless not to acknowledge & champion it
My hope is Ardern’s example will encourage a new generation of young civic leaders across politics we know how serious the problem is -many diverse, thoughtful, smart people with ability to problem-solve are fairly put off standing for #nzpol I hope more are encouraged to step up
