As a Tigers fan, Matt Boyd is one of my favorite pitchers.

It's been tough seeing him struggle so much out of the gate (his 10.24 ERA is the highest among qualified starters this season).

Boyd's 4-seam fastball has less spin and is dropping more, and his slider is not moving as
much, horizontally speaking.

Those are bad signs, but I what I find to be most problematic is the huge difference in his ff and sl release points (0.36 ft in 2019, which ranked as the 14th highest ff-sl diff in all of baseball).

This year, that difference has risen to 0.40 ft
(4.8 inches).

84% of the pitches he has thrown in 2020 have been 4-seamers or sliders.

Hitters, I would suspect, are instructed by their coaches to watch video of Boyd's ff and sl rps.

Boyd releases his slider lower and closer to the first base side, as can be seen below.
In order for Matt Boyd to rebound, he is going to need to get this sorted out. Hopefully, he and the Tigers are aware of this issue.

Making matters worse is the fact that he is quite honestly a two-pitch pitcher right now.
