‘Jesus offers you salvation, you just need to say yes, it’s simple.’

I hear this a lot, but I feel as though anyone who says it has either not read the Bible or possesses all the trustworthy nature of a car salesman.

Gifts are reciprocal. They were in the ancient world and they are today. A gift is usually given in the expectation that one will be returned on the proper occasion.

Jesus is no different.

2/
Salvation is supposedly offered as a gift, or by grace (it’s the same Greek word χαρις) But this is not without its reciprocal nature. The New Testament is clear that you cannot just say, ‘oh, thanks Jesus’ and carry on with life as normal.

3/
He demands that we give up everything: material possessions, family and friends, even our very selves. We are told to ‘carry our cross’ and follow Jesus, which involves changing all of our actions and even thoughts to be in line with his.

4/
My main point is that this is not something simple; It’s the most costly thing you could ever ask of a person. And for those of us who do not line up to the archaic understanding of gender and sexuality, what little we had left is stolen away.

5/
So please realise that when you tell someone that it’s simple and all they have to do is accept Jesus’ gift, you couldn’t be further from the truth.
