Greater Manchester has been a thing since 1974 so it’s been fascinating in the context of lockdown to see how many bits of it are pretty sure they’re somewhere else
The Cheshire ones are the funniest (‘I don’t live in Stockport’ - sorry mate, you do) but what it shows about identity isn’t insignificant. Lots of people in Wigan very much identify with Lancs and not GM (or just Wigan full stop)
I remember going out and doing stuff for the anniversary in 2014 and being sent to Altrincham to vox. Asked people where they were from and Trafford wasnt the answer. Don’t remember anyone saying GM either. Same in Tameside
I always think where you tell people you’re from when you’re on holiday is a good gauge. ‘Manchester’, perhaps. Or ‘Cheshire’ or ‘Salford’. Probably not ‘Greater Manchester’. It’s a municipal boundary, not an identity one
Anyway sorry that was a passing thought. Going back to watching Selling Sunset now
