Going to be some interesting position battles if the VandyBoys get on the field this year. 1/ https://twitter.com/d1baseball/status/1295073096894996481
Starting around the diamond at C:
CJ Rodriguez would seem like an easy incumbent gobbling up innings behind the plate.
Don’t sleep on RS Fr Max Romero Jr who showed good strength this summer. Romero and CJR were both highly touted and both look ready to deliver. 2/
In the incoming class is Alan Espinal, a defensive whiz with some questions about the ability to hit SEC pitching. Plenty of time to prove that out, but can definitely man the dish.
And All Am frosh Jack Bulger is a top of the market bat whose only Q is... ... 3/
1B is pretty open & with Spencer Jones’ ability to throw unclear, may focus on two converted Cs.
Dom Keegan is a beast, had monster summer & should get his crack at 1B/DH.
But Bulger is also getting ABs somewhere, and most likely is competing with Dom in those two spots. 4/
As noted, Jones had TJ this summer; could be back to DH, but not sure about 1B (or OF) #ShrugEmoji.
Also will be interesting to see if Jayson Gonzalez gets a look at 1B if Noland locks down 3B.
Finally, watch for Fr Gavin Casas. Bloodlines and big hacks there. 5/
On to 2B: I was leaning toward Fr Jack O’Dowd here (was my positional #MyGuy heading into draft), but the signing of LSUE transfer Roberto Vaz means we’ll have that electric bat (Kemp comps) up the middle at SS-2B-CF... and I’m guessing 2B. He’ll start somewhere and really hit 6/
O’Dowd can play & will be competing wth Vaz, as will Will Duff, TJ McKenzie & new coming CJ Pittaro.
All can back up Carter Young (2019 positional #MyGuy) at SS. I’d expect Carter to stay up the middle, but could see him shift to 2B if Corbs determines that is the best combo. 7/
Third base is the easiest in the IF. It looks like Nolan and Gonzalez are the two “true 3B” candidates. A bunch other can play there, and each can also play 1B or DH, but guessing one of the two. 8/
The OF is mostly easier. You know Zeke Thomas (CF-RF) and Cooper Davis (CF-LF) will be in there, but who will join? Matt Hogan, Tate Kolwyck and Troy Laneve all have experience, and guys like Vaz, Bulger, Noland, Jones, Keegan could maximize their bats in the third slot. 9/
And let’s not forget the frosh. Enrique Bradfield Jr. has 80 speed and a slap bat that could push for immediate time. Cal Hewitt and Gray Moore also look like athletes that can push for time if they barrel balls. 10/
All in all, a ton of options (sorry for anyone I overlooked in this quick thread). May not be a Barrel King like AMar and an Old Faithful like DuvyDuvyDuvy, but this lineup has serious potential and should be fun to watch. #WearAMask so we get to see it. Fin/ @cmahaffeyVU
