/5 A surgeon I work w closely who routinely goes above & beyond for underserved, is very thoughtful preoperatively, deeply engages pt & fam, technically excellent, calls me after every procedure. Yesterday called after a rare tragic outcome. We spoke candidly about case, pt, etc
/5 Thoughtful consideration & frank discussion of benefits/risks w each procedure w care team AND pt/fam paramount. Honesty & relationship are fundamental & vital. Never undervalue that extra phone call or conversation.
/5 Unfortunately complications are inevitable, but how they're approached before & after make all the difference.
/5 We often assume that best will happen but must prepare yourself, your team & pt + fam for possibility of the worst. Hard but crucial. If it does happen, make time to process w pt/fam, team & above all yourself. Learn, reflect & use experience to move care forward.
/5 I thank this surgeon for prompting me to pause & reflect. I also thank all my colleagues at @UCSFMedicine @ZSFGCare @UCSFIMChiefs @UCSF_CVfellows and beyond for your steadfast devotion to patient care.
