Which 4.5 defenders should you go with? (Thread)
A position and price point with many intriguing options is the 4.5 DEFs. Many will own 2, 3 or even 4.
Fixtures is obviously a big part that we canât take into account yet, but here are my favourite options

Fixtures is obviously a big part that we canât take into account yet, but here are my favourite options

1. Ruben Vinagre (9.1%)
As things stand, Ruben Vinagre is my favorite option. With Jonny being injured for a long time and Wolves not really having any other options at LWB he is currently a steal at 4.5.

best defence in the league. Their xGA (expected goals against) of 6.08 was by far the lowest in the league, keeping 5 clean sheets in those 9 games. Operating as a wing-back, Vinagre didnât get much playing time, but judging off the games he has played I canât say he is...
much of an attacking threat. He averages about one key pass per game and not many shots at all but he will probably pick up an assist or two just based on him playing as a wing-back. The main thing here is that he is a great budget option into that strong Wolves defense.

2. Stuart Dallas (9.9%) / Luke Ayling (9.1%)
Next up we have these new wing-backs from Leeds which people may not know everything about. However, both Ayling and Dallas offer real attacking threat that I have written about in an earlier thread: https://twitter.com/FPL_Swe/status/1285266537931317248

The underlying stats seem to favor Dallas but Ayling did play in fewer games. If I were to pick one it would probably be Dallas just based on that.
The reason why they arenât higher than Vinagre but still very high up on the list is that we still have no idea how the Leeds...

defense will fare in the PL but looking at last season, they should absolutely be able to keep many clean sheets with them only having 35 goals in 46 games. In comparison, Sheffield Utd conceded 41 goals in their Championship campaign 18/19 and we know how they did in 19/20

3. Charlie Taylor (11.8%)
I was very surprised to not see Taylor being 5.0 because of Burnleyâs incredible clean sheet record last season. He therefore makes a great budget option despite not being an attacking threat whatsoever (1 assist last season). With Pope...

and Tarkowski both being 5.5 he feels underpriced.
Pieters or Bardsley I don't think are nailed. When fit, I believe that Lowton will start over Bardsley at RB and I donât see Pieters starting over either Taylor or McNeil on that left flank. Taylor is the safe pick.

4. Tariq Lamptey (4.7%)
Maybe a bit of a surprise to be this high up on the list but if Brighton will line-up like I think they will next season, Lamptey is extremely interesting to me. With Ben White being back after an incredible season in the Championship, I would expect...

Brighton to line-up with a 3-at-the-back with so many good centre-backs at the club.
This will push Lamptey out as a wing-back where he played in the final game of the season against Burnley. In that game he had 4 key passes and created 2 big chances.

potential and Potter seems to prefer him over the aging Montoya with Lamptey starting 7 out of the last 9 games.
The only worry is that Brighton was one of the worst defensively since the restart. Hopefully the introduction of players like White and Veltman will improve that.

5. William Saliba (5.2%)
A lot of hype around Saliba in the FPL Community and itâs understandable. He is young, favored to start for an interesting Arsenal team and with a bunch of potential. One thing he doesnât have however is attacking threat with him still waiting to get...

his first goal or assist in his professional career.
He is the only Arsenal 4.5 defender that I imagine will start and I think he will be a brilliant player for them but the reason he isnât higher is because I donât think he will be as impressive in FPL. Arsenalâs defence is...

still not at the level of teams like Burnley or Wolves with them only keeping 2 clean sheets in 10 games since the restart and their xGA being league average. However, Saliba may be the man to change that.

6. Matt Targett (2.1%) / Kyle Walker-Peters (7.6%)
These two players are extremely similar when it comes to all the stats but they are both very good options if you want something different. They arenât higher on the list because since the restart they havenât had incredible...

attacking numbers with 1 assist and 0 goals between them. Targett is known as a very attacking full-back but with Aston Villa really starting to prioritizing defense and sacrificing attack he has sort of lost that.

overhyped because of people remembering the days when he got 3 assists in one game. Southampton is on the rise but was actually very similar (if not worse) than Aston Villa defensively since the restart.
Hopefully you enjoyed and maybe learnt something from my first thread of the 20/21 FPL season!
Will be posting many more threads, stats and advice during the near future so stay tuned!
