Please make sure that if you share our "ancient civilization" videos of Indigenous peoples south of the border, you also share our current voices, perspectives, community mutual-aids, etc. Too often folks are more obsessed with our "ancient civilization" & forget we still here!
As a Maya womxn, I see this with our pyramids, etc. As a Zapotec womxn, I see this with our Muxe & Matriarchal society. For some reason, we are always referred to in the "past-tense", despite us still being here & still holding to this knowledge, societies, etc.
We are forgotten, dismissed, & ignored in many Indigeneity narratives w/in North America...yet, when it comes to our pyramids, ancient sacred sites, etc. those videos are shared w/out providing context that the descendants of those civilizations are still here!
I think this is IMPORTANT because we are still fighting against post-colonialism that is trying to eradicate our people under extreme poverty, health disparities, etc. I don't appreciate when our current people are ignored or not acknowledged within these contexts.
Make sure that when you share those videos of our pyramids or anything else that is labeled "ancient" to NOT forget to mention that our societies are still living, thriving, and surviving. We are resilient, intelligent, etc. like our ANCESTORS as knowledge is passed down!
