On biblical theology and justice. For Christians, human flourishing and the pursuit of justice is fundamental. Scripture should function as a social imaginary in the search for shalom. This task is complicated in the context of liberal democracies with deep pluralism. 1/4
One of the risks evangelical Christians face is the distortion of Scriptural trajectories by reducing them to individualistic concepts of penal/retributive justice. (an ideological reading, typical in the USA) 2/4
In contrast, a canonical mapping of Scripture can lead us to several & mutually informed CONCEPTIONS OF JUSTICE. NOT JUST ONE. E.g.:
Indicative justice
Restorative justice
Liberating justice
Economic justice
Human rights justice
Eschatological justice

We still need (1) a canonical/theological vision, (2) model how JesusChrist integrates trajectories of justice, (3) a faithful social/political presence, (4)show how this confronts conservative and progressive ideologies, (5)and proclaim why it is good news for a suffering world.
