This is the 2006 bipartisan bill that bankrupted the USPS by requiring it to fund a retirement account for its workers 75 years into the future. No other gov’t agency has this burden, and I seriously doubt any business does. Bill was clearly an attempt at privatization. https://twitter.com/davidpstein/status/1294999071245996032
The Dem-controlled House passed a bill in Feb 2020 to scrap the requirement. It was a bipartisan bill, and Dem and GOP senators introduced companion bill in the Senate, and, shockingly, it has gone nowhere. No action on it whatsoever. https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2020/02/house-votes-end-controversial-usps-payments-future-retirees-health-care/162912/
Now it seems the White House is willing to entertain new legislation that funds USPS for this year but will almost definitely pair funding with other requirements to further privatize it.
Sanders introduced a bill to save the USPS in 2013, when Democrats controlled the Senate, but it went nowhere... https://twitter.com/totallynotabird/status/1295059223748005891
(there was a companion bill in the House, which also went nowhere)
