Quick fact check for incoming grad students at UNC: i am not a member of the grad union on campus. In 2018 when TAs withheld grades in protest of UNC spending millions on militarized police and putting up a confederate monument, graduate student leadership within the union: 1/
1) was told beforehand, 30 min after idea materialized, + was asked to share action with the local 2) did not say to not do it + gave examples of other similar labor actions 3) claimed the gains of that action while undermining it and using it to push their own demands...
4) later pushed out majority of the BIPOC grad students and allies who participated in/supported action 5) claimed TA’s participating in the action threatened campus workers while refusing to explain how, refusing to allow participants to ask campus workers how to avoid this....
And refusing to write a statement (suggested the night of the call to action by action participants) to clarify they were not affiliated w the action...
7) were complicit in a 6 month shut down of the chapter after quorum membership voted to pay reparations (via fundraiser) to a local union employee who was harassed by the local and whose promised pay was never given...
Support UNC campus workers and their actions and demands, including and especially the brave campus worker union members demanding a safe workplace rn. Do not trust any narrative from the grad union about 2018/2019...
during which the chapter Eboard was majority white and almost exclusively either graduate workers/research techs.
Am not interested in naming names, causing drama. I am trying to correct the facts of a narrative that is being used to discredit grad students unaffiliated with the union, and which has trickled into even faculty discourse towards BIPOC grads who weren’t even here then.
