Hi @JulianSmithUK , my Tory MP for life ™️,
During our holidays in France, there was a bit of a milestone for my wife and I.
25 years since we were introduced, 25 years since I moved to the UK thanks to the "hated freedom of movement".
Of all tax, NI, VAT I've ever paid, 90% plus must have been in the UK.
It would make sense for me to take UK citizenship. After all "no taxation without representation"... but I won't.
To me, taking British citizenship would be to show my support for an appalling administration that you support by taking its whip.
It would be supporting Brexit.
It would be supporting a man who you stand by, Boris Johnson, who dared to call the EU Nazi like.
You can't call the EU Nazi like then pretend EU countries are friends and partners.
You can't promise an easy deal during a referendum campaign then appear happy to leave said organisation without a deal.
Leaving the UK at this stage would be very difficult. I have grown roots here even if the UK has become a hostile country to me.
But I will stay, under duress, because circumstances dictate it.
Now it is possible the French will one day vote in an administration as rancid as the current Tory government and if this happens, l will have to remain French. The difference is that I did nothing to become French. This was a lottery.
Taking British citizenship would be a voluntary act. One that I will simply not take.
At least until extraordinary changes take place and I very much doubt they ever will.
