Twitter is probably the worse possible place to discuss the complex & nuanced dynamics involving race. But I swear, the way we’ve been taught about slavery & US apartheid has made it impossible for us to even have the same conversation. Discrimination ≠slavery.
You can’t enter a country & its existing caste system but pretend you’ve entered with a clean slate. You inherit all of it:The majesty of the Declaration & the stinging legacy of slavery. To argue addressing that legacy is unfair to your aspirations in a nation you chose is wrong
I think so much of this thinking is because Americans, whether natural born or naturalized, learn so little about American slavery and its legacy that it’s just easy to brush it off as being akin to any other discrimination groups have faced. It was not. A thread to come shortly.
