Vast majority of people I know who torrent are also the same people who break their bank accounts when boutique dvd labels decide to have sales. idk.
also, when cinephiles talk about torrenting they're basically always referring to movies that otherwise do not exist except in internet spaces and have no real sustainability as a marketable product. It's almost always films that would be in danger of extinction w/o piracy.
The other cool thing about torrenting is that it allows you to be a cinephile without living in New York City. You can watch an old, impossible to find irl movie from your home, instead of relocating and waiting for a print to eventually show up at a rep cinema.
And this is a good thing. It allows a wider, more diverse set of people to become interested in cinema and chase what moves them. It essentially knocks down barriers to a filmic education that was otherwise more difficult to attain, even ten to fifteen years ago.
