Sen. Kamala Harris: A Thread

Part 1: On April 17, 2015, when Kamala Harris was California Attorney General she created the nation’s first policing initiative that addressed Implicit Bias and Use of Force.
Kamala directed the Director of Division Law Enforcement of the California Dept. of Justice to conduct a 90-Day Review with local and federal law enforcement, DAs, youth, and communities to discover ways to better handle training of police officers and special agents.
Part 3: Her office was the very first in the nation to install a body camera program in an effort to determine the best practices for law enforcement. The implicit bias procedural training was certified by POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training.)
Part 4: As part of the 90-Day Review, Kamala created the 21st Century Policing Working Group that discussed what procedures worked or didn’t work. The group was broken up into three subcommittees: 1. community-oriented policing 2. procedural justice 3. effective training.
Part 5: Community-oriented policing highlighted work btw the community and law enforcement. Procedural justice was a philosophical approach where law enforcement treat the community with respect. Effective training developed metrics to analyze training with community feedback.
