I’m seeing lots of tweets lately about RGs vs post-92s & the disappointment of not getting into a ‘good’ uni. Which I get. I went to a grammar school and you were expected to go straight to a RG, otherwise you wouldn’t get a good degree or a good job 1/
There was a big focus on league tables all the time. I got 5 offers for history or hist & politics from RGs which I ended up decling because it didn’t feel right to go to uni at that time for me. I took a gap year and worked. In the end I went to a post92 2 yrs after 6th form 2/
Frankly, it was the best decision I made. Excellent, supportive teaching staff. Caring, motivated SU staff. Opportunities all over; I was housing rep, volunteer rep on the student council, course rep, worked for the su briefly, wrote paid blogs for the uni etc 3/
That’s before getting onto the quality of the course itself. I thoroughly enjoyed it and grew as a person. By contrast, I go to a RG for my MA. It’s much less personal and reminds me of being at a grammar; fairly rigid. The point is, uni is what you make of it 4/
And there are excellent standards and opportunities throughout our HE institutions. Don’t worry about the name, worry about how you yourself will develop there. The league tables aint shit tbh 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5/5
