OK, so kids need school shoes they can wear all day, 5 days a week, in all weather. They need to be practical, comfortable and waterproof. What girls don't need are high heels, and "ballet flats" that have no support or way of staying on the foot. Here's why
Because of the difference between a child’s foot and an adult foot, the best kind of shoe is one that has been formed to match the foot’s developmental anatomy. Inc a thin and completely flexible sole to support and facilitate a full range of movement.
The shoe should be closed at the back, to prevent the toes constantly having to grip onto the sole in order to keep the shoe on the foot. The closure at the top should be adjustable, with something like laces or velcro, and there should be no arch support.
Heeled shoes do none of these things. Not only do they not support the soft, pliable and vulnerable structure of a growing foot, they actively damage them. Even adult feet are damaged by wearing heeled shoes, and so the harm inflicted on a child’s foot is that much greater.
Fashion, rather than comfort/practical. Children should not wear heels at all, and even for "special occasions" they should have another pair on hand to change into. Ie, they are likely to cause injury as well as damage their feet.
The first time I saw a girl in wedges, she was 6 and had come to play with my daughter. She had to sit out of all the playing because she couldn't walk in the grass in them.

Would you put boys in heels or ballet flats? If not, why not? Why do only girls get lumbered with heels?
A popular radio host once *told me *that little girls love trying on their mothers heels. He ignored me when I said my kids liked trying on my worn, smelly Converse trainers... Because it didn't fit the stereotype narrative.
